DVD Cover - Ideas

I've gathered a few covers of existing films of the type I intend to make to look for inspiration.

This Paranormal Activity cover is relatively simple. There are only two effects of note. First the image has an interlaced effect on it, creating grainy horizontal lines to make it look as though it from a home camera. Second on the front cover picture there is a shadow on the door without a person standing there, obviously the supernatural entity of the film, this is achieved with a shaded mask with a moderate amount of feathering. (Paranormal Activity, 2019. Paranormal Activity. [electronic print] Available at: <http://www.kphsonline.com/2009_11_01_archive.html> [Accessed 17 February 2014])

The second Paranormal Activity cover is very similar to the first but the image fills the front and back of the cover, this is cool as you only see what the main characters on the front are so terrified of when you flip the case. There is also an added strip of stills from the film on the back. (Paranormal Activity, 2009. Paranormal Activity. [electronic print] Available at: <http://dvdcovers.ru/world/7415/34256.html> [Accessed 4 March 2014])

The cover for Pulse is a little more extreme, still keeping the interlaced effect though, which is heavily applied to the title logo, there are also lots of good potential layer effects. The endless hands pawing at one of the characters is cool, and it could be created in Photoshop, or at least something like the centre piece. Instead of the fixed strip of stills here they are floating around each other. (Pulse, 2006. Pulse. [electronic print] Available at: <http://www.copertinedvd.org/copertine-dvd/copertina-dvd-pulse/48061/> [Accessed 4 March 2014])

This Pulse Unrated cover has lots of similar effects to the Pulse original, however the background of the back cover is interesting. There is varying sharpness in different places in the image, allowing a character's face to come into focus. The frames for the stills are embossed and glowing, to make them like computer windows.
